A quay wall is a mooring wall wharf installed on the waterfront of a harbor to hold ships, and it refers to a structure with a wall that is almost vertical in the front with a great depth (4.5 m or more).
It is a facility for passengers to directly get on and off and to load or unload cargo between the land and the main ship by mooring. Structural types include gravity type, sheet pile type, pile type, and cell type.

A lighter’s wharf is

a simple quay where small vessels of less than 1,000 tons can dock at a front water depth of 4 ~ 5 m. It is a place where fishing boats and barges mainly dock and unload.
